As diabetes affects millions of people around the world, two things usually come to mind to combat it. One of them is the use of medicine and the second is the use of insulin. These two mechanisms play an important role in controlling blood sugar levels. But their structural aspects and functions are completely different. Now the problem of diabetes is everywhere in the house. So the question is what is better for diabetes insulin or tablets. Many think that if doctors give insulin, that means it’s all over. Let’s see what the doctors say and what is better for diabetes insulin or tablets.

How to know diabetes?

Diabetes can be understood in two ways. First of all, when the level of sugar in the body increases, there are certain symptoms such as sudden weight loss, frequent visits to the bathroom, dehydration, not drying easily when cut somewhere, etc. A blood test should be done only if such symptoms appear. That might catch the problem. In the second case, a person may not know that he is suffering from diabetes. But due to the sudden need for surgery, a simple test revealed that he was suffering from diabetes.

What test is needed to know diabetes?

Basically we do four types of tests to know if you have diabetes. But not everyone has to do all the tests. Usually the prospective patient is asked to perform an empty stomach blood glucose test. After consuming 75 grams of glucose, the blood sugar level is checked two hours later. If someone has symptoms of diabetes, they are asked to do a random blood glucose test. The fourth test is HbA1c. Through this we can know the average level of sugar in the last three to four months. In each case it is seen whether the sugar level is within the prescribed level or limit. Based on that, the next step i.e. treatment should be started.

Treatment of diabetes:

We roughly divide the treatment of diabetes into two categories. First is to control the sugar level by changing the lifestyle. There are two parts to this as well – planned exercise and balance diet, and secondly the use of medicines. However, in case of any patient, which way will be adopted, the doctor will decide it by understanding the situation. For most patients the two are done together.

Insulin for diabetes:

Insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas, regulates blood sugar by facilitating glucose uptake into cells for energy. In individuals with Type 1 diabetes, the body doesn’t produce insulin, necessitating external insulin delivery. Additionally, some Type 2 diabetes cases may require insulin when other treatments fail to control blood sugar adequately.

Insulin remains unparalleled in its ability to rapidly lower blood sugar levels, making it a potent tool in managing severe hyperglycemia and acute situations.

Medications for diabetes:

Several classes of medications, apart from insulin, exist for managing diabetes. These include:

  1. Metformin (Biguanides): Often the initial drug of choice for Type 2 diabetes, it improves insulin sensitivity and reduces glucose production in the liver.
  2. Sulfonylureas: Stimulate the pancreas to release more insulin, helping lower blood sugar levels.
  3. DPP-4 Inhibitors: Aid in lowering blood sugar by preventing the breakdown of incretin hormones, which increase insulin release.
  4. GLP-1 Receptor Agonists: Mimic the action of incretin hormones, enhancing insulin secretion and slowing digestion.
  5. SGLT-2 Inhibitors: Work in the kidneys to promote the excretion of glucose through urine.

These medications effectively lower blood sugar levels but might take longer than insulin to show significant effects.

Tablets or insulin which is better for diabetes:

This is very important in the treatment of diabetes. But before coming to the main point, it is important to clarify one thing, that is, drugs and insulin are not different. Insulin is a type of medicine used to treat diabetes. Also, there are many injections that are currently being given that are not insulin. An example is GLP One Analogue. Sometimes doctors suggest using insulin along with medicine. It all depends on the physical condition of the patient.

When is insulin preferred?

Many people are struck in the conflict which is better for diabetes insulin or tablets. Insulin is the only treatment for type 1 diabetes. In this case insulin is not produced in the body. So it has to be applied from outside. Type 2 diabetes is more common in our country. In this case, if the patient’s blood sugar level is very high, the symptoms are showing clearly or there is a complicated infection, then insulin is used first.

In addition, a patient will undergo surgery in an unconscious state for a long time, still temporarily insulin is applied. Not only that, if it is seen that the patient is suffering from diabetes for a long time, only the tablets are not working, or all the tablets are not tolerated, in that case, insulin is added to the medicine. At this stage insulin can be given up to a maximum of four times a day.

How long to take insulin?

How long the insulin will continue depends on the reasons and severity the insulin is being used for. Let’s say a patient has type 2 diabetes, has too much sugar, and several symptoms are appearing, then doctors often recommend using insulin for one and a half months. After judging the physical condition, only tablets are asked to be taken. In some cases, even with many medicines, the sugar level cannot be controlled, in that case, insulin is also needed. In that case, it is necessary to take insulin for a long time. But it all depends on the physical condition.

Are tablets bad or better than insulin?

Another myth perpetuates that insulin is more effective and safer than drugs in treating diabetes. But this is not always true. Insulin has very few side effects. However, some sugar tablets have additional functions. We know that if sugar is under control, the heart and kidneys are also good. There are some medicines which, apart from sugar control, also help to keep important organs like heart, kidney alive.

But insulin does not have this additional function. Besides, in some stages of diabetes, along with insulin, tablets are also given to control sugar better. So the idea that insulin means very good and tablet means very bad is not correct. This is an oversimplification of a very serious matter. Tablets are preferred over insulin in special cases. In some cases, tablets are also used with insulin.

Myth and Facts Regarding Insulin:

Many people think that insulin is the end state of diabetes. That is, the physical condition of the patient is not good at all. Such an idea is not correct at all. Because someone may be on one or two medications, but will be unconscious for a long time and will have surgery or cannot take oral medications for a few days, then temporary insulin is used. Again, many women are seen with the problem of diabetes in the state of pregnancy. Many of them are also sometimes told to take insulin. It is closed again after childbirth.

There is also another popular idea that insulin injections are quite painful. This is not true at present. Because the needles used now-a-days are very fine and small. When this needle is inserted into the body, there is no sensation. Despite this, many say it hurts. If so then we must observe whether there is any error in the method of taking insulin, the needle is used too many times or the insulin is taken out of the refrigerator and taken cold.

Final Thought:

Do not get involved in this conflict which is better for diabetes insulin or tablets. See a doctor if symptoms develop or if a routine test detects diabetes. Follow your doctor’s advice and stay healthy.
